  • Spokane Valley firefighters rescued a baby quail that fell into a storm drain on August 27th — they explained the bird was separated from its covey and thanked TDS Fiber for helping out.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • At the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex, the Travelling Vietnam Wall is set up for the community to honor veterans who died in the Vietnam War and will remain on display until Sunday. Navy veteran Bernie Wilhelm and over 200 volunteers helped bring the wall—a third-quarter scale replica engraved with 58,281 names—to Spokane Valley to offer a place for personal remembrance.  FOX 28 Spokane

CRIME NEWS

  • Operation Rolling Thunder, led by the United States Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force—working with Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and Spokane Valley Police—resulted in the arrest of 55 fugitives and the clearance of 51 felony warrants including 29 for violent crimes and 38 misdemeanor warrants targeting serious offenses like homicide and kidnapping.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane’s annual Pig Out in the Park returns today at Riverfront Park and runs through September 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily, featuring 65 food booths, 100 free concerts, 45 market booths and four adult beverage gardens—providing a varied festival experience for all ages.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Idaho officials announced that Medicaid reimbursement rates will drop 4% in September to help cover rising costs while Washington updated hunting rules to test wild animals for chronic wasting disease. The Spokane River near Spokane Valley shows dry spots amid worsening drought conditions—NOAA reported about 80% of the Northwest is in drought, which may affect local fish and raise wildfire risks.  Spokane Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane Regional Health District held a Facebook Live session with Dr. Francisco Velazquez and Jenni Horecny to address recent measles cases and exposure events at Providence Sacred Heart as children return to school. Officials stressed the importance of vaccinations—getting a first dose at 12-15 months and a second at 4-6 years to provide over 95% protection while advising parents to watch for cough, coryza, or conjunctivitis.  KHQ
