Good morning, Spokane Valley. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 5th of September.

CRIME NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On September 4th, the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center reported 19 large active fires burning across the Pacific Northwest—14 in Washington and five in Oregon covering 100,000 acres, with 10 lightning-started fires in Washington and the largest being the 30,500-acre Emigrant Fire in western Oregon. Meanwhile, 3,649 firefighters, 188 engines, and 26 helicopters are battling the wildfires and forecasters say thunderstorms will come this weekend before cooler and wetter conditions arrive.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Spokane County is dealing with a grungy haze from wildfires and heat, and the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency reported that air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups today (smoke is coming from fires in Stevens and Ferry counties as well as from British Columbia and northwest Montana). Experts said that shifting northeast winds will change the smoke pattern and the haze is expected to last through the weekend.  Spokane Public Radio
  • The Rattlesnake Fire— which started on September 1— is burning over 6,000 acres near Inchelium along the Columbia River as hot, dry weather fuels its spread. Crews using air support and heavy equipment built containment lines on steep terrain while Level 3 evacuations were ordered for areas from 9-Mile Hellsgate Road to Reford Road Junction.  KHQ
