BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Soulful Soups reopened today at 111 South Madison Street under new ownership after a two-month closure caused by crime & financial stress. The restaurant will serve its popular dishes and host events like live music, bingo nights and poetry slams Tuesday through Saturday. KHQ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Spokesman-Review is accepting entries for its annual high school outdoor writing contest, open to students from Eastern Washington and North Idaho, and entries must focus on outdoors topics while being no longer than 1000 words. Contestants must email their submissions by Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. — winners will receive a $50 first place prize and at least two $30 runner up prizes with publication in the Sunday Outdoors section. - ➤ On Friday, the WSU Board of Regents unanimously voted to rename the Spokane Health Sciences Campus facility as the Kirk H. Schulz Academic Center to honor former president Kirk Schulz who is on sabbatical. Schulz, set to retire after advising new President Elizabeth Cantwell, received strong backing from faculty and community leaders—prompting the change. KHQ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spokane Police are reminding drivers to slow down in school zones near Rogers High School, Longfellow, and Garry Middle School—officers have made stops for speeding, cell phone use, and other violations to keep students safe. KXLY
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Spokane Chiefs opened their season with an 8-2 win over the Kelowna Rockets at Prospera Palace, scoring four goals in the first period while goalie Carter Esler made 36 saves using an 8-2 score margin. The team will travel to play the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday and host Tri-City on Sept. 27. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Rogers beat Clarkston 46-0 for their first varsity win over the rival in more than eight years at ONE Spokane Stadium. Coach Ryan Cole said his team celebrated the win and will meet for a 9 a.m. weightroom session on Monday as they prepare to play North Central on Friday. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ WSU will host UW today at Gesa Field at 4:30 p.m. on CBS in the Apple Cup, with the stadium selling beer and wine for the first time after state board approval—coaches have not yet confirmed a starting quarterback as the Cougars work to boost their offense for the game. The Spokesman-Review
