CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane Civic Theatre’s production of Legally Blonde is receiving praise for its bright look and strong substance from local critics, with Elizabeth Theriault leading the cast with charm and heartfelt energy. The play runs through Oct. 12 and features spirited performances that capture the lively appeal of the show — drawing local audiences to experience its blend of humor and depth.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Yesterday, Julia Quinn, the Bridgerton author, joked with WSDOT on Facebook about bridge repairs and asked if her potholes would be fixed—making local fans smile. Her playful exchange showed her wit and connection with the community.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Boise Mayor Dave Bieter traveled to Spokane this week and said during a speech at the Spokane Business Association dinner that Spokane has 'great bones' but needs stricter enforcement and more funding—he compared its rising homelessness and addiction issues with Boise's measures. He urged local leaders to work together on more effective services and housing options for the vulnerable.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Washington lawmakers reviewed a tax abatement model from Chattanooga’s PILOT program—an initiative that gave developers incentives to build affordable apartments. They are considering how to adapt this idea to boost affordable housing in the region.  Spokane Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study by King’s College London found that women with severe pregnancy nausea—known as hyperemesis gravidarum—had higher risks for mental health problems such as postpartum depression, psychosis, and PTSD. Researchers reviewed nearly 477,000 records and recommended that doctors screen all women with the condition for these issues.  FOX 28 Spokane

SPORTS NEWS

  • A fire caused by an equipment malfunction destroyed the Avista Stadium concessions stand less than a month ago, and officials from the Spokane Indians plan to have it rebuilt by March for the next season. If the stand is not ready by then, they will use a temporary option—ensuring fans can still get hot dogs on opening day.  KHQ
  • Gary Berg, now 81, has run every Bloomsday race since 1977 after a friend urged him to start—he first wore old high-tops—and he plans to run the 50th race with about 20 relatives joining him for a mini family reunion. He sticks to daily walks and avoids sports like pickleball—he worries about falls as he grows older—while keeping the tradition alive.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Eastern Washington began its football season on the road where injuries allowed true freshman Bryce Smith to play—he made two tackles and forced a fumble and now shares the team lead in tackles.
