- ➤ Spokane native Kristin Blyckert returned home from her work in Kyiv—where she helped investigate war crimes—and former Boise Mayor David Bieter shared his city’s homelessness strategy at a local business meeting. Naturopath Dr. Casey Carr explained that the soil’s health affects human health, and apple detective Dave Benscoter launched LostApples.wiki to help locals identify heritage apple trees. - ➤ Numerica employees delivered 600 pounds of hygiene products on Thursday to Project Beauty Share’s warehouse to support its first Hope 4 Kids Hygiene Drive—donations will be distributed to students in nine school districts as the drive continues through October 2. KXLY

- ➤ Families and friends of homicide victims gathered at the Spokane County Courthouse on Thursday to honor their lost loved ones on National Remembrance Day for homicide victims and to share support as some awaited upcoming trials while others testified. KXLY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Raze Early Learning Center will celebrate its grand opening this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 6519 N Lidgerwood Street — the nonprofit will provide 170 childcare slots for children ages 4 weeks to 12 years, with 40 reserved for working families and additional before and after-school care. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ People living near Fairchild Air Force Base must wait for clean water as the military will delay fixing PFAS contaminated groundwater until 2032+ The base has given water filters to 109 homes, but residents say these only provide a temporary fix. KXLY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Several organizations in the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene area will receive millions from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to fight veteran homelessness—Transitions Spokane is set to get $7 million and Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest will receive $6.2 million as part of an $818 million nationwide initiative for fiscal year 2025–26. - ➤ The Department of Natural Resources awarded about $29 million to projects in eastern and central Washington by providing funds to Colombia Land Trust, Spokane Conservation District, Spokane Valley Fire Department and Okanogan County Electric Cooperative to improve wildfire prevention and forest restoration. The grants were funded by the USDA through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to support risk reduction and community safety. FOX 28 Spokane
- ➤ The Spokane Valley City Council will review a proposal presented on September 23 by the Innovia Foundation to build a 65,000-square-foot ice rink facility with NHL-sized dual ice sheets funded entirely by a local benefactor— the plan asks for a 99-year ground lease with an option for the city to purchase the facility for $9.4 million— as local groups show support for the project.
