- ➤ Spokane Valley and Spokane County Deputies will host Coffee with a Cop on October 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Starbucks, 506 N. Sullivan Road—giving neighbors a chance to meet local officers—and share a cup of coffee. Spokane County
- ➤ Spokane Reimagined is challenging policymakers to try a Week Without Driving from September 29 to October 5 in a bid to understand the needs of residents who walk, bike or take the bus—volunteers set up handmade benches near bus stops in 29 neighborhoods to highlight the issue. - ➤ Starbucks permanently closed four stores this week with three locations in Spokane at Hamilton Street and Indiana Avenue, Division Street and Buckeye Avenue, and Heritage Village. - ➤ The Department of Education announced yesterday that $270 million in grants returned to schools to boost student mental health—applications are now open for schools and school psychologists but not for counselors or social workers after the funding was canceled last spring amid controversy. - ➤ A firefighter detained by ICE while battling the Bear Gulch fire in the Olympic National Forest has been released after a month of detention — Governor Bob Ferguson said community advocates helped secure his release and he plans to return to protecting local land and wildlife. FOX 28 Spokane
- ➤ The Spokane County Board of Commissioners, the S.C.O.P.E. Board, and Sheriff John Nowels announced that the S.C.O.P.E. Volunteer Program will merge with the Sheriff’s Office on January 1 to boost communication and efficiency. The program will continue supporting public safety tasks like traffic control and data entry + save citizens significant costs. Spokane County
- ➤ Greene Street northbound will be closed this week for utility work as contractor crews work on the North Spokane Corridor and Spokane River Crossing Project — the closure affects local traffic.
