COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Washington Trust Bank is hosting a free Community Shred Day on Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at three Spokane locations to safely dispose of sensitive documents and prevent identity theft — local residents can shred up to one legal-size file box at no cost.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Colleen Bass, a security guard killed at Eastern State Hospital, shocked her family Saturday morning when her mother Linda Meckel learned of the death from officers arriving at her home at about 7:00 a.m.—her loved ones remember her as kind and dedicated.  KHQ
  • A new tool called Seek Then Speak is now available to sexual assault survivors in Spokane County to privately access support services and complete a self-guided interview—generating a report that survivors can save, send to police, or discard—and SPD says the program is meant to supplement traditional investigations.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Spokane County is searching for a new jail medical provider after the previous provider left Washington — officials have named Mediko Correctional Healthcare, a company from Virginia, as their top candidate and will sign a contract before the current agreement expires at the end of the calendar year.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Spokane Valley City Council is reviewing public feedback on a proposal to build a regional ice facility in the Sullivan Park area. City leaders are weighing financial impacts as a local benefactor offered a 44-million-dollar gift contingent on meeting specific conditions while local sports groups and school districts show interest.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service recalled 58 million pounds of frozen corndogs and sausage products—wooden pieces in the batter led to five injuries and the agency warned consumers to check their freezers.  FOX 28 Spokane

SPORTS NEWS

  • Monday’s Greater Spokane League slowpitch softball game saw Mt. Spokane beat Ferris 26—4 as Kaydin Bradeen homered twice, going 3 for 4 with six RBIs, and in girls soccer, Ferris blanked Central Valley 5—0 with Rachael Jones making six saves while Hailey and Hannah Orellana each scored a goal.   • Tuesday's Greater Spokane League prep meet saw Deer Park beat Cheney 16-11 in softball as Jillian Marshall hit two home runs and drove in eight runs — and Pullman won 4-2 over Clarkston in girls soccer when Augi Villarino scored twice.
