ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A truck pulling a flatbed overturned at the Broadway Avenue on-ramp to I-90 westbound in Spokane Valley, and drivers are advised to use alternate routes and expect delays.  KXLY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Unionized Starbucks partners protested outside the company’s Seattle headquarters after over two dozen stores closed and 900 workers were laid off, with protestors saying the affected workers were not given a transfer option. Local stores on Hamilton, Division and Newport Highway had been shut down, and Starbucks said its $500 million investment in partner benefits was aimed at lowering turnover while it welcomed union talks to finalize a new contract — responding to the protest.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County commissioners approved talks with Mediko Correctional Healthcare to replace NaphCare for inmate medical care if the contract is approved — county staff rated Mediko highest among four bidders and plan to finish the switch by the new year. The decision follows NaphCare’s split and a recent lawsuit settlement over a payment dispute.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Spokane Valley Fire Department is drawing attention to rechargeable tool battery safety during Fire Prevention Week—urging residents to charge batteries on a flat, dry surface and to detach batteries for proper winter storage if equipment is unused.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study of over 260,000 seniors found that those who suffer a concussion are 69% more likely to develop dementia within five years. The research showed seniors with a head injury also face higher odds of needing home care and long-term facility placement—most injuries come from falls— so extra care to prevent falls is advised.  FOX 28 Spokane

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Reports from Spokane Realtors and Coeur d’Alene Regional Realtors show home sales and median prices have increased in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene areas so far this year. In Spokane, 4,229 closed sales were recorded through September with a median price of $425,000 and higher inventory, while in Kootenai County single-family sales rose 4% with a median price of $547,250 and homes spent 90 days on the market—indicating a growing market.  Spokane Journal of Business

  • Luca Foster, a four-star wing at Link Academy, will visit Gonzaga on Oct. 18—coinciding with a preseason exhibition against NAIA Northwest University on Oct. 19. He is one of several top prospects that Gonzaga is courting as it works to strengthen its 2026 recruiting class.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On Monday, 19-year-old Berkly Catton made the Kraken’s opening night roster which leaves the Spokane Chiefs the option to bring him back if he plays no more than nine NHL games. The Chiefs struggled on the power play in their first five games, scoring on only 11.8% of chances compared to 28.9% last season—coach Brad Lauer said the team is working to fix the issue.  The Spokesman-Review
