CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane will host the 3rd annual Halloween X-SPO event at the Spokane Convention Center on October 18 and 19. Organized by Lilac City Comic Con—this event offers booths from local artists, tarot card readings, live magic shows, themed panels, and costume contests for visitors of all ages with free entry for children 12 and under.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Public Schools urged students and families to submit FAFSA so they could access federal loans and grants for both college and trade programs. College counselor Dawn Hilsendeger explained that the simpler form helps families plan early — easing concerns over future school expenses.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Spokane Public Schools is urging students and families to apply for FAFSA as soon as possible because the simplified form eases access to need-based aid and federal student loans — college and career counselor Dawn Hilsendeger said it is crucial for both college and trade program funding. The district will hold FAFSA information sessions at Rogers on October 15th from 5 to 7 p.m., Ferris on October 22nd from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Shadle Park on October 27th from 2:30 to 5 p.m., Lewis & Clark on October 30th from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and North Central on November 13th at 7 p.m.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane voters will decide in November on two ballot measures that will fund school improvements, including a rebuild of Adams Elementary and a renovation at Garry Middle, and park upgrades across the city. City officials Garrett Jones and Adam Swinyard explained the Together Spokane proposals — showing how the measures combine projects for schools and parks.  Spokane Public Radio
  • The Spokane Business Association asked city officials to restore voter-approved Proposition 1—saying local votes back the change to keep business rules fair.  KXLY
  • Spokane County officials including Commissioners Josh Kerns and Amber Waldref and Public Works Senior Director Kyle Twohig gathered today to detail the county's strategies for removing snow on over 5,100 lane miles of roads. They explained the use of Ice Slicer to melt compact snow, Apex as a liquid deicer, and a blade attachment called Shark Teeth for thick ice—residents were urged to clear driveways and equip vehicles with emergency supplies.  KHQ
  • Spokane County Public Works is preparing for winter and discussed plans at a recent meeting with County Commissioners and Public Works Senior Director Kyle Twohig—officials explained they will use dry and liquid deicers plus grader blade attachments on over 5,100 lane miles to manage snow and ice. Residents are asked to clear vehicles and obstacles from streets and check that their vehicles have winter emergency supplies.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • A WSU study found gun deaths are now the main cause of death for adolescents aged 11 to 18—overtaking car accidents. The research shows gun deaths increased from 1,945 in 2001 to 3,224 in 2022 and became the leading cause in 2017.  FOX 28 Spokane

  • Amanda Cole and her two sons received keys to their new home in Five Mile Prairie on Wednesday from First Story in partnership with Hayden Homes, which arranged a zero-down, zero-interest, 30-year mortgage at a fixed rate of $500 per month—helping the family move on after 12 years in a Spokane apartment.
