  • The Campbell House Halloween event offers a fun scavenger hunt and craft activity for families on Friday, October 31 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.—tickets cost $5 per person with free admission for children under 3.  KXLY

  • Mercer Mass Timber will expand its Spokane Valley facility with a $30 million private investment and a $250,000 state award from the Governor’s Economic Development Strategic Reserve Fund. The move is set to support manufacturing innovation and add about 50 high-value jobs while anchoring the company’s future in the region — a step that strengthens Washington’s clean-manufacturing industry.  Spokane Journal of Business

CULTURE NEWS

  • A celebration of Bing Crosby’s career will be held on Saturday at the theater where he began performing jazz+ featuring Spokane’s MasterClass Big Band and a special tribute by his grandson, Phil Crosby Jr. The event will honor his enduring impact on the local jazz scene.  The Spokesman-Review

  • The U.S. Commerce Department announced tariffs on timber and lumber that are expected to raise home building and renovation costs in Spokane. Local realtors and builders say the new measures add a 10% duty on imports plus higher tariffs on kitchen cabinets and furniture that will further increase next year, making homes even harder to afford.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Public Schools unveiled new state-of-the-art buses with driver tablets, cameras and RFID cards as part of National School Bus Safety Week. The buses also offer a mobile app that gives parents real-time ride updates — a system that extends tracking beyond Spokane — to help keep students safe.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Millions in the Inland Northwest risk losing SNAP benefits in November if the government shutdown continues—local food pantries in Spokane and surrounding areas plan to aid those affected.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Multicare physician Dr. Gretchen LaSalle—vaccine expert for the region—said that flu vaccination numbers are down, with only 13.6% of Washington residents and 10.8% of Spokane County residents getting a shot this season compared to nearly 30% last season. She advised residents with concerns to speak with a trusted clinician for more information.  KHQ
  • About 300,000 residents buying insurance on the state exchange will face a 21% rise in premiums next year as federal tax credits expire, with Spokane County rates expected to climb 86%. Insurance officials said revised rates may appear a few weeks after open enrollment starts Nov 1—if Congress extends the credits, many customers could see lower costs.  Spokane Public Radio
  • The Diaper Dollars program gives eligible families a $40 e-card—usable at 6,200 retailers—to help cover diaper costs and ease health risks tied to infant care. It started in Illinois and Ohio and will expand to Washington soon to reduce financial strain on parents.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Richland-based Complex Care Center opened a new primary and chronic care clinic occupying 4000 square feet on June 20 at 1120 N. Pines Road in Spokane Valley to help meet growing demand for quick care. Located near MultiCare Valley Hospital and Interstate 90 — the clinic uses telehealth while gradually offering more in-person appointments, with plans to serve up to 30000 patients like its Tri-Cities location.  Spokane Journal of Business
  • The Rayce Rudeen Foundation will screen the documentary Fentanyl: Death Incorporated at The Fox Theater on Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m.—the film highlights a fentanyl crisis that has led to over 3,000 opioid-related deaths statewide and 205 in Spokane County. A Q&A with experts and community members will follow to discuss ways to prevent further loss.  KXLY
