Good morning, Spokane Valley. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 25th of October.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Spokane County family farms face rising costs and falling prices as U.S.—Canada trade tensions squeeze profit margins, warned Walter Schweitzer of the Montana Farmers Union. At Wildland Cooperative on Green Bluff, worker-owner Caitlin Mahoney said their hyper-local model benefits from strong community support, though many farms remain at risk without new policy changes.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Mortgage rates fell for the fourth-consecutive week, nearing 6% as the average 30-year fixed rate dropped four basis points ending Oct. 23. Lenders and analysts expect the Fed will announce a quarter-point rate cut at its Oct. 28-29 meeting amid concerns over rising labor activity and limited economic data during the government shutdown.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State park staff dedicated a new parking lot for Knothead Valley Trailhead on Friday to improve visitor access and ease crowding at the nearby Indian Painted Rocks Trailhead. The facility on West Rutter Parkway—including more than 30 parking stalls, a paved access road and bathroom facilities—is part of state efforts to support safe urban recreation.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • On October 24th, the Washington State Department of Health announced it received extra funding from the USDA to keep the WIC Nutrition Program running through mid to late November — the funds will support food benefits and an 11-member team while higher redemption rates could exhaust the allocation sooner.  FOX 28 Spokane

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Supermarkets in the area have created a full Halloween show with towering candy mountains, moving skeletons and talking witches to turn routine shopping into a festive event — retailers use motion sensors, synchronized lighting and sound effects to surprise shoppers and boost holiday excitement.  FOX 28 Spokane
