- ➤ Spokane County family farms face rising costs and falling prices as U.S.—Canada trade tensions squeeze profit margins, warned Walter Schweitzer of the Montana Farmers Union. At Wildland Cooperative on Green Bluff, worker-owner Caitlin Mahoney said their hyper-local model benefits from strong community support, though many farms remain at risk without new policy changes. - ➤ Mortgage rates fell for the fourth-consecutive week, nearing 6% as the average 30-year fixed rate dropped four basis points ending Oct. 23. Lenders and analysts expect the Fed will announce a quarter-point rate cut at its Oct. 28-29 meeting amid concerns over rising labor activity and limited economic data during the government shutdown. - ➤ State park staff dedicated a new parking lot for Knothead Valley Trailhead on Friday to improve visitor access and ease crowding at the nearby Indian Painted Rocks Trailhead. - ➤ On October 24th, the Washington State Department of Health announced it received extra funding from the USDA to keep the WIC Nutrition Program running through mid to late November — the funds will support food benefits and an 11-member team while higher redemption rates could exhaust the allocation sooner.
