Good morning, Spokane Valley. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 30th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Silverwood Theme Park raised $38,120 for local food banks during its September Community Appreciation Weekends — the funds came from $4 added to regular tickets and $1 to youth and senior tickets. Representatives met on October 23 to deliver checks and discuss rising food needs in the area — the donation will help cover infrastructure costs and delivery expenses.  KHQ

CRIME NEWS

  • Students and staff at John A. Shaw Middle School in Spokane’s Bemiss neighborhood were placed under lockdown Wednesday morning after a student brought a BB gun, police arrived within eight minutes to escort the student to the front office, and the school resumed normal operations less than half an hour later—no threat was reported.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Spokane County couple rescued a northern saw-whet owl trapped in a concrete pipe last week near Fort Spokane — they used a hardwood stick to help the small bird escape before starvation. The rescue highlights the advice to cover open pipes to stop other raptors from getting caught.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown declared an emergency Wednesday to speed up access to shelter beds, eviction help, and mobile medical treatment for residents and homeless people amid colder weather, a change in city law tightening restrictions on where unhoused people can stay, and a federal shutdown that stops SNAP benefits — a measure that affects 40 million Americans. The emergency lets the mayor bypass slow contract processes — a move aimed at adding 50 extra shelter beds and coordinating outreach through the Home Starts Here Initiative.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Washington allocated $19.4 million for the Electric Vehicle Charging Program to build new Level 2 and DC fast-charging stations in communities, workplaces, tribal sites and public agencies. Eligible public agencies, tribal entities, nonprofits and qualified private firms must submit proposals by December 18 at 4:00 p.m. PT—this funding will support a cleaner transportation future.  FOX 28 Spokane

  • Spokane Regional Health District confirmed the county's first flu-related death this season— the person in their 70s with underlying conditions was one of seven people hospitalized from the flu.  FOX 28 Spokane
