COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food banks in Spokane Valley remain overwhelmed by rising demand as residents rely on them for food assistance.  KXLY
  • Mt. Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park will host its Winter Prefunk Party tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lodge 2 — a free event with live music, games, food specials, and photobooths. Local band One Street Over will perform — playing from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the celebration.  KHQ
  • Wake Up Call coffee shops will offer free drinks to veterans and Gold Star families on Tuesday, Nov. 11—each eligible for a 20-ounce beverage at any location including Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Tri-Cities, Walla Walla and Yakima.  KXLY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Spokane Valley firefighters pulled a burning dumpster away from a commercial building using a tow strap on Wednesday evening to prevent property damage (fire officials said the fire was contained to the dumpster despite smoke entering the appliance crusher) and no injuries occurred.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane Symphony named Steve Wenig as its new executive director and will ring in the holiday season with festive shows at the Fox Theater. The season includes performances of The Nutcracker Ballet from December 4-7, a Home for the Holidays pops concert on December 13-14, and a New Year's Eve celebration with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony + marking its 80th anniversary.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Washington has doubled enrollment capacity for its regional dental education program in Spokane to 64 students (thanks to state investment) so that students can complete half of their dental training locally. They will spend five months in 57 regional offices doing clinical work in rural and underserved areas.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Spokane Valley and Spokane should plan extra travel time on I-90 as the Washington Department of Transportation will close eastbound lanes from 7 p.m. Sunday until 5:30 a.m. Monday—crews will then close westbound lanes overnight until Wednesday morning for stormwater inspections related to the North Spokane Corridor/I-90 connection.  KXLY
  • A taxpayer-funded sculpture known as the Stepwell in Riverfront Park has been closed for most of its existence because of persistent graffiti and cracks since it was commissioned during the park makeover. City employees have privately criticized its condition (calling it an eyesore and a piece of sh-art) while officials plan annual maintenance to repair it.  KXLY
