  • Veterans Larry and Ed, known for their long-time Toys for Tots work that provided 13,000 children with gifts last Christmas, are set to retire from volunteering this year — they plan to stay involved with the organization as they enjoy their golden years.  KHQ
  • The Spokane Valley Fire Department Swiftwater Rescue Team returned after spending eight days helping with flood rescues in Western Washington. They worked with local and state crews and remain on standby as heavy rain and wind are forecast today.  KHQ

  • WM released a guide yesterday offering Spokane residents practical steps to reduce holiday waste—advice covers eco-friendly wrapping, local shopping, and proper disposal of items like batteries and Christmas trees.   • Heavy rains and mild temperatures have expanded mallard habitats, making the birds more visible in local parks and roadside ponds this holiday season, and wildlife experts say the vibrant colors of male and female mallards add a cheerful sight for neighborhood bird lovers (official advice is to avoid feeding them bread).  The Spokesman-Review

  • The joint Spokane Valley Fire Department and City of Spokane Fire Department swift water rescue team returned on Saturday, Dec. 20 after an eight-day deployment in Skagit County to assist with flood rescues + their efforts supported dozens of communities affected by heavy rains.  FOX 28 Spokane

  • Spokane Valley residents will pay $5,404.49 for a basic ambulance ride starting Jan. 1 after prices surged 412%. Fire chiefs + city officials are assessing options to lower costs for patients.  The Spokesman-Review
