ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Chosen Vintage, Eastern Washington's largest vintage store, led local efforts in sustainability by offering gift cards for returns instead of refunds while nearby businesses adopted similar reuse practices. Liquidonate donated over 12 million items to nonprofits over four years, helping reduce waste and environmental impact.  FOX 28 Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • Allergist Dr. Cherie Zachary (ACAAI) outlined five resolutions to ease allergy and asthma symptoms by recommending regular check-ups, healthy eating, stress management, preventative care, and tailored exercise. Her advice, released on Dec. 28, encourages residents to start the new year with a personalized health plan.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Federal authorities announced Mountain West Food Group is recalling about 2,855 lbs of raw ground beef sold under its Forward Farms label due to E. coli O26 contamination. Consumers with beef produced on Dec. 16 and bearing a Jan. 13 sell-by date should discard or return the product.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Author Eric Vickrey presents a new book about the 1970 Spokane Indians—a team led by Tommy Lasorda that won 94 games and a Pacific Coast League championship with future Dodger stars. He gathered memories from players and fans to offer a look at one of the top teams in local baseball history.  Spokane Public Radio
  • No. 7 Gonzaga beat Pepperdine 96-56 on Sunday at Firestone Fieldhouse — marking its 50th win against the Waves and 30 consecutive conference opener wins. Braeden Smith and Graham Ike reached key milestones in a game that bolstered the team’s national ranking.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Ski trails opened Sunday, Dec. 28 at local resorts after wintry conditions set in; Schweitzer Mountain operated five lifts with nine runs, Mt. Spokane opened 12 trails after a delayed start, Lookout Pass groomed 20 trails, and Silver Mountain offered two runs for skiers and snowboarders.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Mount Spokane Ski and Snowboarding Park opened its slopes Saturday with runs including Magic Carpet, Beginner's Luck, Parkway Express, Illuminator and Half Hitch Handle Tow and operates today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as conditions allow (snow tubing is daily through the holidays, switching to weekends after Jan. 4).  KHQ
  • College hoops fans in Spokane area will see the final West Coast Conference season featuring Gonzaga and Washington State as local teams face shifting conference alignments for next season. Games tip off today at Firestone Fieldhouse — a familiar venue for key matchups before the change.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Gonzaga women’s basketball team is set to face LMU today at their home arena. Local fans are expected to support the team as they compete in what promises to be a closely watched matchup.  KXLY
