- ➤ Lewis-Clark State College professor Amanda VanLanen explained that Washington earned its title as the leading apple producer by the early 1920s by using its ideal climate and settlers planting apple trees to secure land claims—spreading orchards from Spokane to Walla Walla. She noted that eastern growers in New York later recognized the shift as western producers advanced their techniques. Spokane Public Radio

- ➤ Spokane law enforcement leaders plan to lower homicides and gun violence by using hot spot policing and hospital violence intervention programs – strategies that have worked in other cities – while urging state policy changes to toughen drug penalties and hold violent offenders accountable. - ➤ Spokane astronaut Anne McClain and her Crew-10 launched from the Kennedy Space Center on Friday at 4 p.m. aboard SpaceX's Dragon Endurance capsule and will reach the International Space Station around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, with team members including NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers, Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov, and JAXA astronaut Takuya Onishi. - ➤ Gonzaga women’s basketball team is expected to join the 32-team Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament—and Washington State is likely to be considered after missing the NCAA Tournament. - ➤ Coach Mark Few said Gonzaga has lost too many close games this season—each by only a few points—and the team holds one of the lowest luck ratings among top teams as they face tough challenges in 2024-25. The Spokesman-Review

- ➤ Bridget Burns, a Lewis and Clark high school graduate and Michigan Tech sophomore, competed earlier this month in the NCAA Nordic skiing championships in Hanover, New Hampshire—finishing 39th in a 7.5-kilometer race and 30th in a 20K race despite feeling unwell on a warm day.
