COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Preschoolers from Northeast Youth Center honored fallen veterans on Friday morning by placing American flags and pennies on graves at Fairmount Memorial Park, marking the eighth consecutive year of their tribute.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Volunteers placed over 3,000 American flags at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery on Friday, May 22 to honor fallen service members ahead of Memorial Day (uniting groups from Fairchild Air Force Base and the Fallen Heroes Project).  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Three-year-old Cora Tacke was diagnosed with stage one cancer near her eye on May 1, and her family began a 29-week treatment plan that includes chemotherapy with plans for radiation in Seattle. Community support through fundraising & auction efforts has eased their journey during this challenging time.  FOX 28 Spokane

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 22, Salish School held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new campus along the Spokane River near Spokane Falls Community College after a land donation and fundraiser. The campus will add a school, community center, and outdoor spaces plus solar panels and battery storage to boost language and culture.  Spokane Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Transit Authority announced extra bus service for World Cup festivities starting in June. The upgraded schedule includes 10-minute intervals on the City Line, 30-minute rides on Routes 7 and 63 to the airport, and shuttles from Route 11 to Riverfront Park and near Spokane Arena.  Spokane Public Radio

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • For 10 years, two friends in their 70s have met monthly for hikes, skiing, or snowshoeing followed by visits to brewpubs such as Whistle Punk in Spokane Valley. Their ongoing tradition highlights the value of outdoor activity + socializing in their community.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gonzaga's baseball team lost a close 6-5 game to third-seeded San Francisco on Friday at Scottsdale Stadium — ending their record-setting WCC season before moving to the Pac-12 next year.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Hundreds of mountain bikers will compete in the annual 24-hour race at Riverside State Park starting today at noon, riding a 14-mile loop until Sunday at noon. The event is family friendly with a kid’s parade (part of the celebration) and food trucks for participants and spectators.  FOX 28 Spokane
