COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Washington State Fallen Heroes Project set up its 'Boots on the Ground' memorial display at Numerica Veteran's Arena on Sunday, May 24 to honor Vietnam and post-9/11 veterans with nearly 700 boots and provide Gold Star families a place for remembrance (and connection).  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Free Fishing Weekend takes place on June 6 and 7, letting anglers fish without a license on lakes, shorelines, and piers for many species (WDFW), while licenses remain needed for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, halibut, and shellfish. The department will stock 15.5 million trout and kokanee in over 500 lakes.  FOX 28 Spokane

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Novara Alliance — formed by Avista, Itron and McKinstry — is recruiting local partners to pinpoint energy and water challenges affecting affordability and supply. The group will host a summit next fall to spark innovation and bolster economic growth in the region.  Spokane Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County Fire District 3 reported on May 24 that fire danger has increased from low to moderate, urging residents to check burn restrictions, keep water and tools nearby, and fully extinguish fires to avoid accidents.  FOX 28 Spokane

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Mt. Spokane girls softball team won the 3A State Championships on May 24 — marking the first win for a Greater Spokane League team since 2007.  FOX 28 Spokane
